With the advent of MC deciding to dissolve and the widespread wars now raging across eve is there a place for high calibre mercs who are capable of changing 0.0?

So long as there are wars there will be a place for mercenaries.

I don't believe we will see another significant(able to take on large 0.0 alliances) merc force again in Eve. They would need to base out of empire & I can't see a large amount of experienced 0.0 fighters willing to do that. Any merc force that lives in 0.0 will either get steamrolled by a 0.0 alliance (or multi-alliance blob) or be subject to the oversight of a 0.0 alliance(obvious problems with that).

I had a lot of respect for the MC. They had a powerful cap fleet and were a significant player in 0.0 politics. But they haven't been mercs in years. Sure, they took a few short-term contracts here & there but the majority of their operations for the last few years has been those of a 0.0 alliance. The 0.0 merc business hasn't really existed for years & I don't see much to show that it will suddenly return.

Rather than Mercs actively taking space, I suspect it will be more to hire to subsidize your fleet (at great expense no doubt).

Who can afford a merc size of any force? Wouldnt an alliance be better off spending its isk on Dreads/Carriers/Moms and titans of its own rather than spend billions on some force which has no loyalty?

Merc work is for small forces...not for large ones...

Mercs could live out of NPC 0.0 I think.

Problem with Mercenaries in EVE is, Mercenaries only really work when what they do is profitable.

In EVE that would make Mercenaries just way too expensive for any real use. 100b wouldn't go very far... Which is why you get pseudo-mercs like MC, who do it because they want to and then actually have to earn ISK and ships like everyone else anyway.

The thing is that if ATF had ISK to throw around, I'd far rather we spent it on our own members than mercs. Even if it ends up losing us a war, I'l sure nobody would complain about fighting outnumbered in alliance-funded BS Smile

I think there is definitely still a place for them, but their role (or, at least, the role MC played) is now defunct as everybody has caught up in terms of capital ships.

imo any future merc force will be alot smaller, won't (generally) use capital ships and will do more interdiction, then conquest / siege.

Back when I was in Scalar Federation, there were a couple merc corps working for them. Basically I think they had more isk then they new what to do with, and didn't have the PVP strength to hold their territory. When people started to push against them, it didn't help much.
